Getting there
The valley is accessible from Martigny via Orsières by train and then by bus to La Fouly. By car, the route leads through the Lower Valais directly into this secluded high alpine valley.
Best season
The main season for hikers is from mid-June to September, when the high passes are free of snow. In winter, the valley is a popular destination for cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers.
Terrain & paths
A classic alpine landscape awaits you with green pastures, steep moraines, and views of glaciers. The valley is part of the famous Tour du Mont Blanc and gives correspondingly good hiking trails.
What to bring
Full hiking equipment including mountain boots and weather protection is essential at this altitude. Even in midsummer, you should have warm clothing for the cool evenings in the mountains.
Parking
Parking options are available in Orsières and at several public car parks in the village of La Fouly. As the valley is narrow, spaces are limited, making the PostBus a very good alternative.
Safety
Pay attention to the markings and do not underestimate the distances in this expansive valley. The danger of rockfall or sudden thunderstorms should always be considered in this alpine location.
Time needed
A visit is worthwhile for a whole day or as part of a multi-day hike around the Mont Blanc massif. Many guests use La Fouly as a base camp for explorations in the immediate surrounding area.
