Porrentruy Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Porrentruy Castle overlooks the town in the Canton of Jura and served for centuries as the splendid residence of the Prince-Bishops of Basel. Following their expulsion from Basel during the Reformation in the 16th century, the bishops made Porrentruy their permanent seat and expanded the medieval fortress into a prestigious Renaissance palace. The most striking feature of the complex is the 'Tour Réfous,' a circular keep from the 13th century offering vast views over the Ajoie region. The architecture combines defensive medieval elements with the elegance of Baroque and Neoclassical additions. In the late 18th century, during the French Revolution, the castle was occupied, ending episcopal rule. Today, the site houses various cantonal authorities and courts, yet it remains a significant cultural symbol for the region and a testament to the close link between ecclesiastical and secular power in the Holy Roman Empire.
