💡 Tips
- Pay attention to the one-way alternating traffic schedule on the mountain road to Stöckalp, the cable car's valley station. The road is only open for uphill or downhill traffic at specific times.
- Melchsee-Frutt is a car-free resort in summer. You can park your car at Stöckalp and take the cable car up.
- Use the 'Fruttli-Zug', a small road train that runs between Melchsee-Frutt and Tannalp. It's great for families or for covering longer distances on the plateau.
- The region is famous for its fishing. Try your luck catching a trout in one of the three mountain lakes (a permit is required).
- Hike up to the Blausee, a smaller, intensely blue lake located above the Melchsee. The path is short but steep and has fantastic views.
🍽 Food
Enjoy a freshly caught trout from one of the local lakes. Many restaurants around Melchsee and Tannensee offer this dish.
Experience a cozy evening in a mountain inn with a traditional Swiss cheese fondue or raclette.
When in season (late summer), be sure to try a homemade blueberry cake at one of the mountain huts. A real treat.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the demonstration dairy on Tannalp to see how cheese is made and to buy fresh Alpine cheese directly from the source.
In the small shops in the village of Melchsee-Frutt, you can find local products like honey, cured meats, and handmade souvenirs.
An easy, flat walk around Lake Tannensee has beautiful views and is far less crowded than the path around the main Lake Melchsee.
The small chapel on a hill provides a panoramic view and is a place of silence and contemplation, away from the busier paths.
Pack a picnic and hike up to the small Blausee (Blue Lake). It's the first-rate spot to enjoy the tranquility of the mountains in near-total seclusion.
Water temperature…
Melchsee-Frutt is located in the canton of Obwalden on a sunny terrace above Kerns. The central highlights are Melchsee and Tannensee lakes, which attract anglers and hikers during the summer months. Access is primarily via the cable car from Stöckalp, as the resort is largely car-free. In winter, the area transforms into a family-friendly ski resort with 36 kilometers of slopes and an 8 km long sledding run back down to Stöckalp. For climbers, the limestone cliffs of Boni-Stock offer various routes and climbing gardens. Local restaurants serve traditional Central Swiss specialties like Älplermagronen with fried onions. Those seeking tranquility will find handy conditions at the remote Tannalp guesthouse. The best time to visit is from June to September for hiking, and from December to April for winter sports.
