💡 Tips
- Take a walk down the Brunngasse, considered one of Europe's prettiest lanes, early in the morning to experience it without the crowds.
- Look out for signs reading 'Holzschnitzerei' (woodcarving) or 'Offene Werkstatt' (open workshop). Many local artisans are happy for visitors to watch them work.
- The steam railway up the Brienzer Rothorn is a must-do. Buy tickets online in advance to avoid long queues, especially on sunny days.
- Instead of just exploring the shore, take a scheduled boat trip. The perspective of the village and mountains from the water is unique. The ticket is often valid for the whole day.
- The Giessbach Falls are particularly impressive. You can reach them by boat and a historic funicular. A path even leads behind one of the waterfalls.
🍽 Food
Try the freshly caught 'Felchen' (a type of whitefish) in one of the restaurants along the lake promenade. It doesn't get any fresher.
Buy a piece of alpine cheese from a local market or a fromagerie in the area. It tastes excellent with local pear bread.
Although they originate from nearby Meiringen, giant meringues with plenty of whipped cream are a popular sweet treat in Brienz as well.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The main street, Hauptstrasse, is lined with shops selling everything from small souvenirs to large sculptures. Look for the 'Echt Brienzer' label for guaranteed local origin.
The Swiss Woodcarving Museum (Jobin) has an excellent shop where you can find high-quality pieces while also learning about the history of the craft.
A walk along the lake to the east or west of the village will quickly lead you to quiet spots with benches and lovely views.
Numerous hiking trails start right in the village and lead into the forests and up to the alpine meadows. The 'Chäppeli' chapel provides a wonderful view over the lake.
A short post bus ride takes you up to the Axalp. Up there you'll find quiet hiking trails, mountain lakes and a peaceful atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the lake.
Water temperature…
Brienz is located at the eastern end of the turquoise Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland. The village has been the center of Swiss woodcarving for centuries and still hosts the country's only state-run woodcarving school and a violin-making school. A walk through Brunngasse, once voted the 'most beautiful street in Europe', showcases magnificent 18th-century chalets decorated with intricate wooden carvings. A top highlight is the Brienz-Rothorn Railway, Switzerland's only steam-powered rack railway, which transports visitors to the summit for wide-open panoramic views. Nearby, the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum has a glimpse into historic Swiss rural life and traditional crafts. The lakeside promenade is excellent for a peaceful evening stroll. Brienz is well-connected by rail from Interlaken or Meiringen. The best time to visit is between May and October when the mountain railway is in operation. Culinary recommendations include regional cheese specialties and fresh trout from the lake. The village exudes a tranquil charm, making it a distinct alternative to the busier Interlaken.
