Vernier is located to the west of Geneva city and has evolved from a former farming village into one of the region's most populous municipalities. Its geography is bounded by the Rhone River to the south, while industrial zones and the Geneva-Cointrin Airport shape the landscape to the north. Vernier is best known for its bold post-war architecture: the Le Lignon district houses one of the world's longest residential buildings, a monumental structure from the 1960s that is considered an icon of modernism. Despite heavy industrialization, particularly in energy supply and logistics, Vernier has significant recreational areas such as the Bois-des-Frères and nature trails along the Rhone. The demographics are characterized by a high degree of internationality, reflected in an animated and multicultural urban society. Economically, the municipality is a powerhouse for the canton, hosting numerous international companies and critical infrastructure. Transport links are excellent via motorways, railways, and the nearby airport, making Vernier a preferred location for both commuters and industry. In recent years, increased efforts have been made to enhance the city's appeal through sustainable urban planning and the expansion of bicycle paths.
