💡 Tips

  • Take an easy, flat walk from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. The path provides constant views of waterfalls on both sides of the valley.
  • Staubbach Falls is most photogenic in the late afternoon when the sun hits the spray, creating rainbows. A path leads up behind the falls, you will get wet!
  • Instead of the expensive trip to Jungfraujoch, consider the cable car up to Mürren. It gives equally spectacular high-alpine views for a fraction of the price.
  • Parking in the valley is scarce and expensive. Use the efficient trains and PostBuses to get around instead.

🍽 Food

🍽
Käseschnitte (Cheese Slice)

A slice of bread soaked in white wine, topped with a generous amount of melted Raclette cheese. Look for it at a guesthouse in Wengen or Mürren.

🍽
Meringue with Cream

Enjoy a huge portion of this sweet specialty at a mountain restaurant overlooking the valley. It's often large enough to share.

🍽
Barley Soup (Gerstensuppe)

A warming and nutritious soup with barley and cured meat, excellent for a cool day. You'll find it in most traditional restaurants.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Farm Shop Products

Look out for 'Hofladen' (farm shop) signs in the valley. Farmers sell alpine cheese, dried sausage, and honey directly from their farms.

🛍
Waterfall Souvenirs

The main street is full of shops selling Staubbach Falls memorabilia. Look for locally made items rather than mass-produced ones.

🧘
Trümmelbach Falls

Although popular, going inside the mountain to see this glacier waterfall carving through rock is an intense and loud experience that blocks out all other noise. Go early or late to avoid the crowds.

🧘
Village of Gimmelwald

Take the cable car up to this tiny, car-free village above the valley. Find a bench and just enjoy the silence and the incredible view.

🧘
Path on the other side of the river

Follow the path on the opposite side of the Weisse Lütschine river, away from the main road. It's much quieter and provides a different perspective of the valley.

Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the deepest U-shaped valleys in the Alps, flanked by gigantic, vertical rock faces. The name 'Lauterbrunnen' (many springs) reflects the 72 waterfalls that plunge from the cliff edges into the valley floor. The most famous is the Staubbach Falls, dropping nearly 300 meters, making it one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. The village itself maintains its traditional charm with flower-adorned chalets and idyllic mountain pastures. A must-see attraction is the Trümmelbach Falls, ten glacial waterfalls located inside the mountain, accessible via stairs, tunnels, and an elevator. Lauterbrunnen is also the well-suited starting point for trips to the car-free alpine villages of Mürren and Wengen. From Stechelberg, the cable car ascends to the Schilthorn summit (Piz Gloria), famous as a James Bond filming location. For hikers, the valley floor provides flat paths with constant views of cascading water, while higher trails provide more strenuous adventures. The valley is also a world-renowned spot for base jumpers due to its sheer cliffs. The best time to visit is early summer when the snowmelt makes the waterfalls particularly powerful, or autumn for clear views of the high peaks. Lauterbrunnen is easily reachable by train from Interlaken. In the local restaurants, be sure to try 'Älplermagronen' (alpine macaroni with cheese and potatoes) and fresh mountain cheeses. The valley's peaceful and majestic atmosphere has inspired many, including the poet Goethe, who wrote one of his famous poems here.
