Pyramids of Nuri (Sudan)

Weather…

The pyramids of Nuri form the largest and most impressive royal necropolis of the ancient Kingdom of Kush. Located on the left bank of the Nile opposite Jebel Barkal, they house the tombs of over 20 Kushite kings and 54 queens. The most prominent ruler buried here is Taharqa, the most powerful pharaoh of the 25th Dynasty, whose pyramid, with a side length of 52 meters, is the largest in all of Kushite architecture. The Nuri pyramids are characterized by their steep angle of inclination and were originally cased in white limestone. Beneath the pyramids lie complex burial chambers, often hewn from the rock, which once contained rich treasures and artistic amulets. Despite centuries of looting and erosion from sandstorms, Nuri remains a monumental testament to the wealth and religious devotion of the rulers of Napata, who adapted the Egyptian funerary cult in a unique way.
