Western Deffufa (Sudan)

Weather…

The Western Deffufa is the preeminent monument of the ancient city of Kerma, the capital of the first independent Nubian kingdom. This massive mud-brick structure, which once reached a height of over 18 meters, likely served as the religious center or temple of the Kerma culture (c. 2500-1500 BC). The structure is characterized by its solid walls with no interior rooms on the ground floor; a staircase led to a platform at the top where ceremonies were presumably held. The Western Deffufa is a masterpiece of ancient Nubian architecture, testifying to the power and organizational level of a state that was a long-term rival to pharaonic Egypt. Workshops for bronze and ceramic processing were located in its vicinity, highlighting Kerma's importance as an economic hub. Today, it is one of the largest and oldest preserved mud-brick buildings in Africa and forms the center of the Kerma archaeological site.
