Gangaramaya Temple (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important and architecturally diverse Buddhist temples in Colombo. Established in the late 19th century by the revered monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera, the temple features an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural styles. Beyond religious structures, Gangaramaya houses an extensive museum containing a vast collection of Buddha statues from across the globe, ivory carvings, and even classic cars. A distinctive part of the complex is the Simamalaka Shrine, designed by the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa, which sits on floating platforms in the Beira Lake. The temple serves as an educational center and a library of rare palm-leaf manuscripts. Each year in February, the temple organizes the Navam Perahera, one of the city's largest cultural processions featuring dozens of elephants and dancers. Gangaramaya is not just a place of worship but a significant social and cultural hub for the capital city.
