Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

The Sri Dalada Maligawa, commonly known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is the most revered Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, situated in the heart of Kandy. It houses the relic of a tooth belonging to Gautama Buddha, an object that historically signified the right to rule the island. The temple complex was developed over centuries by various monarchs, with its most iconic structures originating from the Kandyan period. The sacred relic is kept within seven golden caskets in a heavily guarded inner sanctum. Each year, the temple hosts the 'Esala Perahera,' one of Asia's most spectacular religious festivals, featuring a grand procession of traditional dancers, drummers, and elaborately decorated elephants. The temple's architecture reflects the unique Kandyan style, characterized by intricate wood carvings and bustling murals. In 1988, the temple and the surrounding city of Kandy were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
