Kandy, widely regarded as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, is a city of immense spiritual significance and historical grandeur, set amidst the rolling emerald hills of the Central Highlands. Established as the last capital of the ancient kings, Kandy maintained its independence from European colonial powers far longer than the coastal regions, only succumbing to the British in 1815. At the city's spiritual core is the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses what is believed to be a canine tooth of the Buddha. This relic has historically signified the right to rule Sri Lanka and draws pilgrims from across the globe. The city is geographically defined by the easy on the eye Kandy Lake (Bogambara Wewa), built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807, providing a tranquil center to the bustling mountain city. Every year, Kandy comes alive during the Esala Perahera, a magnificent ten-day festival featuring torch-bearers, traditional dancers, and scores of richly caparisoned elephants. Beyond its religious importance, Kandy is an educational hub, home to the sprawling University of Peradeniya and the world-renowned Royal Botanical Gardens, which date back to the 14th century. The surrounding region is the birthplace of the world-famous Ceylon tea industry, with many estates offering tours that detail the journey from leaf to cup. Kandy's climate is significantly cooler than the coastal lowlands, making it a popular retreat. The city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, preserving its unique blend of Kandyan architecture and British colonial planning, and it remains a vital symbol of Sinhalese national identity.
