Galle Fort (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Galle Fort, located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, is the most complete surviving example of a fortified European city in South and Southeast Asia. Originally constructed in 1588 by the Portuguese, it was captured by the Dutch in 1640, who significantly expanded the fortifications with the massive granite walls seen today. The fort covers a 52-hectare peninsula and represents a unique fusion of European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. Inside the ramparts, a living community thrives amidst cobblestone streets, colonial-era churches, museums, and historic villas now housing chic boutiques and cafes. Iconic landmarks include the Galle Lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, and the towering Clock Tower. The fort's ancient walls famously protected the interior from the devastating 2004 tsunami, minimizing damage within its perimeter. UNESCO recognized the cultural and historical significance of Galle Fort by naming it a World Heritage site in 1988.
