Teruel is the capital of its eponymous province in the autonomous community of Aragon, situated in eastern Spain. The city is world-renowned for its Mudéjar architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage designation that reflects a unique synthesis of Christian and Islamic design elements. Premier examples of this style include the Cathedral of Santa María de Mediavilla and the magnificent towers of San Salvador, San Martín, and San Pedro. Teruel is also the setting for the famous legend of the "Lovers of Teruel," a 13th-century tragic romance whose protagonists' remains are housed in a dedicated modern mausoleum. Geographically, the city sits on a high plateau, known for its harsh climate and its reputation as one of Spain's coldest provincial capitals. The surrounding area is home to Dinópolis, one of Europe's largest paleontological theme parks, built upon the region's significant dinosaur fossil discoveries. Despite its remote location, Teruel is home to a strong cultural character and is celebrated for its exceptional Serrano ham, which holds a protected designation of origin.
