Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Spain)

Weather…

The Mezquita-Catedral of Córdoba is an architectural marvel that reflects the complex history of the Iberian Peninsula. The original Great Mosque was built starting in 784 under Abd al-Rahman I and was expanded several times over the following centuries. Its vast prayer hall is famous for a forest of 856 columns made of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite, which support the characteristic red-and-white horseshoe arches. After the Christian reconquest of Córdoba in 1236, the building was converted into a Catholic church. In the 16th century, King Charles V ordered the construction of a striking Renaissance cathedral nave directly into the center of the Moorish structure, resulting in a unique and fascinating fusion of Islamic and Christian architectural styles.
