Frías (Spain)

Weather…

Frías proudly holds the title of the smallest city in Spain, a status granted by King John II in 1435. Located in the northern province of Burgos, the town is dramatically perched on the 'La Muela' rock formation. Its most striking feature is the collection of 'hanging houses' (casas colgadas) built directly onto the cliff's edge, creating a vertical silhouette that merges medieval architecture with the natural rock. The highest point is crowned by the Castle of the Dukes of Frías (Velasco Castle), featuring a keep built on a precarious rocky outcrop that provides sweeping views of the Ebro Valley. Below the town, the Ebro river is crossed by a spectacular 143-meter-long medieval bridge. Unusually, this bridge retains its central defensive tower, which was historically used to control access and collect tolls. Frías serves as a gateway to the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Natural Park, making it popular for hikers. The steep, narrow streets are best explored on foot, and a short walk leads to the nearby waterfalls of Tobera. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the mountain air is refreshing. Its unique position and preserved military architecture make it one of the most photographed spots in Castile.
