💡 Tips
- The Station District (Barrio de la Estación) has the highest concentration of century-old wineries in the world. Plan a whole afternoon for it, but be sure to book tours and tastings online in advance as they fill up fast.
- The 'Herradura' area in the old town comes alive in the evening. It's well-suited for a 'txikiteo' (tapas and wine crawl from bar to bar).
- While the 'Batalla del Vino' (Battle of Wine) in late June is famous, it's a very intense and wet affair. If you prefer a quieter trip, avoid that period.
- Many bodegas close for a siesta at lunchtime (approx. 2 PM - 4 PM). Plan your visits for the morning or late afternoon.
- For a great photo view of Haro and the Ebro bridge, walk a little way up the hill on the opposite side of the river.
🍽 Food
The horseshoe-shaped streets of the old town are packed with tapas bars. Try one speciality at each bar, like 'champi' (grilled mushrooms) or 'pimientos rellenos' (stuffed peppers).
Use the opportunity to learn the difference between the ageing levels. Order a glass of each at a bar and compare. Crianza is younger and fruitier, Reserva is more complex.
This vegetable stew is a speciality of the Ebro valley. Look for a version made with fresh, seasonal vegetables. It's a popular starter in traditional restaurants.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Almost every bodega in the Barrio de la Estación has its own shop. It's the place to buy wines you've just tasted, and you can often find older vintages or special bottlings that are hard to get elsewhere.
Look out for 'pastelerías' in the old town. Buy a box of 'pastas de Haro', which are local tea biscuits that make a nice souvenir or gift.
Escape the bustle and take a quiet walk along the River Ebro. There are paths leading away from the town centre that offer a peaceful, rural atmosphere.
This central park is a lovely spot to sit in the shade and watch the world go by. It's especially calm in the morning before the town fully wakes up.
Instead of just focusing on the huge names in the Station District, research a smaller, family-run bodega in the surrounding area. The tours are often more personal and less crowded.

Haro is the undisputed center of wine production in the La Rioja region and one of the most important places for wine tourism worldwide. The heart of the town is the famous Station District (Barrio de la Estación), where renowned wineries like Muga, López de Heredia, and CVNE are lined up in historic 19th-century buildings. This density of world-class wineries in one place is unique; visitors can participate in exclusive tastings and explore the deep cellars where wine ages for years. Aside from wine, Haro features an impressive old town with the magnificent Plaza de la Paz as its center. The architecture is characterized by noble palaces from the 16th to 18th centuries and the Church of Santo Tomás with its masterful Plateresque facade. An absolute highlight in the calendar is the 'Batalla del Vino' (Wine Battle) on June 29th, where thousands of people pour thousands of liters of wine over each other in the fields of Bilibio, a joyous festival declared of National Tourist Interest. The town's gastronomy is also top-tier, combining traditional meat dishes like lamb chops grilled over vine shoots with cutting-edge cuisine. Haro is easily accessible by train or car and gives cultural experiences year-round, but especially during the autumn harvest when the entire region is in a festive mood. For nature lovers, the nearby banks of the Ebro River and the hills of Bilibio offer excellent hiking opportunities with wide views over the Ebro Valley.
