Laguardia (Spain)

Weather…

Laguardia sits atop a hill in the heart of Rioja Alavesa and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The town was founded in the 10th century as a defensive fortress and has almost entirely preserved its medieval layout. The entire town is surrounded by an impressive wall that once protected the core of the Kingdom of Navarre. Since cars are banned from the old town, visitors can stroll peacefully through the narrow cobbled streets, admiring the stately houses with their family crests. Laguardia's true secret, however, lies underground: almost every house in the historic center has its own wine cellar ('Calado'), all interconnected to form an underground labyrinth. These tunnels were originally dug as escape routes during sieges and later used for the first-rate storage of Rioja wine. Many of these cellars can be visited today. Another highlight is the Church of Santa María de los Reyes with its spectacular 14th-century polychrome portal, which has preserved its original colors thanks to its protected location inside a vestibule. Laguardia is surrounded by an endless sea of vineyards that change color from deep green to lively red and gold depending on the season. In the immediate vicinity are some of the world's most modern wineries, such as Bodega Ysios designed by Santiago Calatrava. The town is also known for its gastronomy, particularly dishes like 'Patatas a la Riojana' or grilled lamb. Visiting a wine festival in the autumn months is an unforgettable experience for any wine lover.
