Valldemossa is the highest village on Mallorca and arguably its most scenic. Its honey-colored stone houses and steep streets, adorned with meticulously cared-for flower pots, create an enchanting atmosphere. The village is dominated by the Real Cartuja, a 14th-century Royal Charterhouse that later became a residence for monks. Its most famous guests were the composer Frédéric Chopin and the author George Sand, who stayed here during the winter of 1838-39. Visitors can still see the rooms they occupied and Chopin's original piano. Valldemossa is also the birthplace of Saint Catalina Tomás, and colorful tiles depicting her life can be found next to almost every front door. A local culinary specialty is the 'Coca de Patata', a light potato-based pastry that is best enjoyed in a local cafe. Surrounded by the forested hills of the Tramuntana, the village has a peaceful escape with remarkable mountain views. The mountain village was a hotspot of 2024 Mallorca anti-tourism protests, with calls to cap coaches at the Carthusian monastery. Visits before 10 a.m. are recommended to avoid the crowds.
The most pleasant time to visit is May, Jun, Oct.
