Deià is an idyllic village on Mallorca's northwest coast, clinging to the slopes of the Teix mountain. For decades, it has attracted writers, musicians, and artists, earning a reputation as a cosmopolitan sanctuary. Deià is exceptionally safe, the biggest risk being the winding MA-10 coastal road with steep drops, especially in fog or rain. The path to Cala Deià is steep and rocky, sturdy shoes essential. Parking spots are extremely scarce and fines come quickly.
Deià has been an international artists' village since Robert Graves' days, English is understood almost everywhere. Mallorquí is the native tongue and a 'bon dia' is much appreciated. German helps in some galleries and B&Bs.
