Sóller lies positioned in a lush valley in the heart of Mallorca's Tramuntana Mountains. Known as the 'Valley of Gold' for its abundant orange and lemon groves, the town prospered in the 19th century through citrus trade with France. This wealth led to the construction of grand Modernist buildings, most notably the Sant Bartomeu church on the central square. Getting there is half the fun: the Tren de Sóller, a historic wooden railway, has been carrying passengers from Palma through mountain tunnels since 1912. An equally welcoming vintage tram connects the town center to Port de Sóller, a circular bay with a scenic harbor and beach. Sóller is a hub for hikers and cyclists, offering a blend of mountain scenery and Mediterranean coastal charm. Don't leave without tasting the famous local orange ice cream or visiting the botanical garden. Spring 2024 saw anti-tourism protests reach Sóller and the Tramuntana valley, with calls to limit tourist coaches. The historic wooden train to Palma nonetheless remains one of the most popular excursions.
The most pleasant time to visit is May, Jun, Oct.
