Arcos de la Frontera, located in the province of Cádiz, serves as the dramatic and spectacular gateway to the famous Route of the White Villages (Pueblos Blancos). The town's historic center crowns a sheer limestone ridge, surrounded on three sides by the sweeping curve of the Guadalete river. This formidable natural position made it a crucial and nearly impregnable frontier fortress between Christian and Moorish territories during the Middle Ages. At the heart of the labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets and brilliantly whitewashed houses lies the Plaza del Cabildo. From the viewpoint here, the Balcón de la Peña Blanca, visitors are treated to a dizzying panorama of the river valley and vast olive groves far below. The architectural centerpiece is the Basílica de Santa María de la Asunción, seamlessly blending elaborate Gothic and Baroque elements. Navigating the steep inclines and ancient stone arches requires good footwear, but rewards the traveler with hidden, flower-filled patios and tiny taverns serving rustic stews (potajes).
