Tonga (South Sudan)

Weather…

Tonga is a significant historical village and river port in the Upper Nile State of South Sudan, situated at the northern edge of the Sudd wetlands along the White Nile. Since the early 20th century, Tonga has been a key site for Christian missions, particularly for the Comboni Missionaries, who established schools and medical facilities there. Geographically, the settlement serves as a gateway to the oil-rich areas of northern Unity State and as a vital transit point for the agricultural products of the Shilluk people. During various phases of the Sudanese civil wars, Tonga was frequently contested due to its strategic riverine position and served as a base for different armed groups. The village architecture reflects a blend of traditional Shilluk round huts and colonial-era missionary buildings. Despite the destruction caused by conflict, Tonga remains a hub for cultural life and trade for the communities along the Nile.
