The Doleib Hill Mission is located in Upper Nile State, near the confluence of the Sobat River and the White Nile, and is one of the oldest Protestant mission stations in South Sudan. Founded in 1902 by the American Mission (Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions), it aimed to support the Shilluk people in education, healthcare, and religion. Geographically, the mission sits on a prominent elevation known as the Doleib Hills, which protects it from seasonal Nile floods and gives expansive views of the surrounding plains. Doleib Hill quickly became a hub for agricultural innovation, introducing new farming techniques and crops to bolster the local economy. The mission also played a pivotal role in literacy and the development of a written form for the Shilluk language. During the Sudanese Civil War, the station was evacuated and damaged multiple times but remained a symbol of the social commitment of Christian groups in the region. Today, the site continues to serve as a religious and educational center, deeply rooted in the identity of the Shilluk community.
