Fashoda (South Sudan)

Weather…

Fashoda, now known as Kodok, is a site of immense historical and cultural significance in Upper Nile State on the western bank of the White Nile. For centuries, it has served as the ceremonial capital of the Shilluk Kingdom, where the coronation of the 'Reth' (king) takes place in a sacred ceremony. The site gained worldwide fame through the Fashoda Incident of 1898, a diplomatic conflict between France and Great Britain that nearly led to war. French troops under Major Marchand met Lord Kitchener's British forces here, representing the peak of the 'Scramble for Africa.' Geographically, Fashoda occupies a strategic position controlling access to the Upper Nile, making it a coveted post for colonial powers in the 19th century. The local architecture is defined by traditional Shilluk structures and remnants of colonial fortifications. Today, Kodok is an administrative center but maintains its role as the spiritual heart of Shilluk identity and a witness to South Sudan's complex history between tradition and colonialism.
