Malakal River Port (South Sudan)

Weather…

The Malakal River Port on the White Nile is the economic gateway to northern South Sudan and the administrative capital of Upper Nile State. It is one of the country's largest and most historically significant ports, providing a crucial link between the oil-rich northern territories and the capital, Juba. Geographically, Malakal is strategically located at the confluence of the Sobat River and the Nile, making it a handy hub for regional commerce. Before the civil war, the port was a thriving center for the export of grain and gum arabic, as well as the transit of petroleum products. Despite heavy destruction during armed conflicts, the port remains indispensable for supplying the local population and UN bases in the region. The port facilities comprise several wharves and warehouses that are currently undergoing gradual reconstruction. The Nile is notably wide and deep here, making Malakal accessible to almost all types of inland vessels.
