Seongsan Ilchulbong is one of South Korea's most iconic natural landmarks and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. This dramatic tuff cone was formed by a hydro-volcanic eruption in shallow waters about 5,000 years ago. Rising from the sea like a giant fortress, its massive crater is ringed by sharp rocks that resemble a majestic crown. The climb to the top via well-maintained wooden stairs takes about 20 minutes and provides a rewarding panoramic view of the coastline and the interior of Jeju Island. Beyond its geological wonders, the site is a hub for experiencing traditional Jeju culture. At the base of the peak, you can witness the resilient haenyeo (female divers) as they demonstrate their age-old diving techniques in the bay. In springtime, the surrounding fields are blanketed in spirited yellow canola flowers, creating an impressive contrast against the blue ocean. Easily accessible by bus or car from Jeju City, the peak is for nature enthusiasts. While the sunrise hike is the most famous experience, visiting in the late afternoon also provides beautiful lighting for photography. After the hike, enjoy local delicacies like fresh abalone soup at the many nearby restaurants.
