Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary (South Africa)

Weather…

Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, located near Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route, is the world's first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. Opened in 1998, the 12-hectare indigenous forest provides a permanent home for primates previously held in captivity, rescued from laboratories or private ownership. The sanctuary's primary goal is to foster a natural environment where these animals can rehabilitate and socialize freely. It currently houses over 550 primates, including Madagascar's lemurs, Asian gibbons, and South American capuchins. Visitors explore the forest on guided walking safaris, allowing for intimate observations of the animals' natural behaviors without the obstruction of cages. A highlight of the visit is the 128-meter suspension bridge that spans the forest canopy, offering a unique aerial perspective of the inhabitants. Monkeyland adheres to strict non-interaction policies, ensuring that the primates are respected as wild animals and not subjected to human contact for entertainment.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The mild year‑round climate in Plettenberg Bay allows visits in any season, but the best chance to spot primates is during the cooler months of March-May and September-November. On hot days monkeys retreat to the shade and are less active.
🌅
Best time of day
Between 8 and 10 a.m. primates are most active, foraging after the night. Late afternoon before feeding time is also good for observation; during midday they usually rest.
📜
Etiquette
Never touch or feed the primates - even if they seem tame, they are wild animals with potentially dangerous reactions. Always keep your distance and follow staff instructions on the pathways.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are helpful for observing primate behavior from a distance without disturbing them. Comfortable walking shoes and weather‑appropriate clothing are recommended, as the sanctuary terrain is gently hilly and rain is possible.
🧭
Getting there
Monkeyland is located on the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma, with a signposted entrance. Free parking is available; the sanctuary entrance is right next to the parking lot.
🦌
What to expect
Primates roam freely in the enclosure - it may take a while to spot all species, as some hide well. Take your time and sit on one of the benches in the shade; monkeys often approach on their own.
