Oudtshoorn is the largest town in the Klein Karoo region and is globally recognized as the 'Ostrich Capital of the World.' Set between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges, it was established in 1847. The town experienced an extraordinary economic boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the ostrich feather fashion craze, leading to the construction of grand 'Feather Palaces' that still dominate the local architecture. Today, Oudtshoorn remains a critical agricultural hub, focusing on ostrich farming and lucerne production. Just a few kilometers outside the town lie the Cango Caves, one of the world's most spectacular limestone cave systems and a premier South African tourist attraction. Each year, the town hosts the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK), one of the nation's largest arts festivals. Its unique history and arid landscape provide a fascinating cultural contrast to the coastal regions of the Western Cape.
