Knysna Forest (South Africa)

Weather…

Knysna Forest is the largest continuous complex of indigenous high forest in South Africa, situated along the Garden Route between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. It is a temperate afro-montane forest characterized by a humid climate and a dense canopy of Ironwood, Stinkwood, and Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. The forest possesses a mystical quality and is the subject of many local legends, particularly regarding the elusive Knysna elephants that still roam its depths. During the 19th century, the forest was the heart of a booming timber industry, providing wood for shipbuilding and fine furniture. A brief gold rush also occurred at Millwood within the forest, leaving behind ruins that can still be visited today. Ecologically, it is a biodiversity hotspot, home to the lively Knysna turaco and the rare Knysna dwarf chameleon. Now part of the Garden Route National Park, the forest is strictly conserved. Hiking trails through the woods lead past ancient giants, offering a glimpse into a largely undisturbed and ancient ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The forest area is excellently accessible from the Garden Route, mostly via the N2 national road and small turn-offs into nature. The town of Knysna is the central and most well-known starting point for excursions.
📅
Best season
A visit is possible all year round, but the spring and autumn months offer pleasantly mild temperatures for hiking. In summer it can get quite warm, while winter occasionally brings cool, rainy days.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trails vary from well-maintained, flat walking paths through the dense indigenous forest to more challenging trekking routes. The ground is often covered with leaves and can be somewhat soft and slippery after rain.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable footwear, a light daypack with enough water and snacks, and a rain jacket are usually sufficient. Insect repellent and a camera for the impressive giant trees should not be missing.
🅿️
Parking
Designated and mostly safe parking is available at the official entrances to the national park and the starting points of well-known hiking trails. Alternatively, you can park in Knysna and book organized tours into the forest.
⚠️
Safety
The main trails are considered very safe as long as you stay on the marked paths to avoid getting lost in the dense vegetation. Watch out for baboons in certain areas and store food safely.
⏱️
Time needed
Short circular routes can be comfortably walked in 1 to 2 hours and are well suited for families. Extended explorations or multi-day hikes deep into the forest area are also possible with proper planning.
