Paarl is the largest town in the Cape Winelands district, situated on the banks of the Berg River at the foot of the massive granite domes known as Paarl Rock. The name is derived from the Dutch word for 'pearl,' as the wet granite glistens like pearls in the sunlight. The town was officially settled in 1687 when Huguenot and Dutch farmers established vineyards in the fertile valley. Paarl holds immense cultural significance for the Afrikaans language; it was here in 1875 that the first association to promote the language was formed, marked today by the striking Afrikaans Language Monument on Paarl Mountain. Economically, the city is a powerhouse for wine and fruit production, serving as the headquarters for major institutions like the KWV wine cooperative. Paarl's Main Street stretches over 12 kilometers, making it one of the longest in the country, and is lined with historic Cape Dutch, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture.
