Beaufort West is the oldest town in the Karoo and is often called the heart of South Africa's semi-desert region. Established in 1818, it became the first municipality in the country in 1837. The town is strategically positioned along the N1 highway, connecting Cape Town and Johannesburg, making it a vital refueling and logistical stop for transcontinental travelers. Beaufort West is most famous as the birthplace of Professor Christiaan Barnard, the heart surgeon who performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant in 1967. The local museum features an extensive collection dedicated to his pioneering work. The surrounding economy is primarily driven by sheep farming, producing the world-renowned Karoo lamb. On the outskirts lies the Karoo National Park, which protects the unique biodiversity of this arid plateau, including endangered species like the black rhinoceros and the riverine rabbit.
