Wilderness
Wilderness is a true sanctuary for nature lovers, set between the Indian Ocean and the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains. The village is renowned for its vast, unspoiled sandy beaches and a complex network of lakes, rivers, and lagoons that form part of the Garden Route National Park. It is a place where tranquility reigns and the focus is on outdoor exploration and ecological preservation. Activities in Wilderness are centered around its diverse water systems and lush forests. Visitors can kayak up the Touw River to reach the starting point of the 'Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail,' which winds through indigenous forests to a beautiful waterfall. The area is also a world-class destination for paragliding, with launching sites on the cliffs offering bird's-eye views of the coastline. Birdwatchers will find the wetlands especially rewarding, as they are home to numerous rare and colorful species. The village center features an appealing collection of sidewalk cafes and restaurants serving local fare. Wilderness is conveniently located on the N2 highway, just a 20-minute drive from George. While the summer months from November to March are the most popular for beach activities, the mild winters are well-suited for hiking and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Garden Route.
