Las Khorey is a historic port city on the Gulf of Aden in the Sanaag region and was once the proud capital of the Warsangali Sultanate. The city is home to a history spanning millennia and was known in antiquity as a major hub for the trade of frankincense and myrrh. In the mid-20th century, Las Khorey experienced an industrial golden age when one of East Africa's most modern fish canneries was built there, employing thousands until the outbreak of the civil war. Geographically, the city is defined by its position between the sea and the steeply rising Golis Mountains, underscoring its strategic value. Today, many of the historic forts and industrial facilities lie in ruins, yet the city remains a vital center for artisanal fishing and regional trade. Efforts to revitalize the port and the fishing industry are central to local development plans. Las Khorey is also regarded as a significant cultural heritage site, representing the maritime power of the Somali sultanates over several centuries.
