Las Khorey Fort was for centuries the power center of the Warsangali Sultanate, one of the oldest and most formidable empires in the Horn of Africa. The city of Las Khorey is located on the Gulf of Aden coast and functioned as a strategic port for the trade of frankincense, livestock, and gold. The fortifications were erected to safeguard the Sultan's seat of power and to maintain maritime sovereignty. Under the leadership of Sultan Mohamoud Ali Shire, the region became a bastion of resistance against British colonial expansion. The fort's architecture blends massive defensive walls with residential quarters for the Sultanate's nobility. Historical accounts describe Las Khorey as a flourishing metropolis that maintained diplomatic ties as far as India and Yemen.
