Cal Madow Peaks (Somalia)

Weather…

The Cal Madow Peaks represent the highest and most ecologically significant mountain range in Somalia, stretching across the Sanaag and Bari regions in the north. The name translates to 'Black Mountains' in Somali, referring to the dense forests that contrast sharply with the surrounding pale limestone deserts. With Shimbiris as the highest point, reaching 2416 meters, the range provides a cool highland climate that supports relict forests of juniper and wild olive trees. These peaks are world-renowned for their biodiversity, housing rare species such as the Somali Pigeon and the Somali Linnet, which are found nowhere else on Earth. Geologically, the region is characterized by rugged limestone formations and deep gorges carved by erosion over millions of years. The Cal Madow range is also the primary source of frankincense and myrrh, which have been harvested here for millennia. Despite its striking beauty, the region remains largely inaccessible to international tourism due to political instability and a lack of modern infrastructure.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the highest peaks requires a multi-day trek starting from the base camps at the foot of the mountains, mostly via Erigavo. The treacherous paths should never be attempted without experienced local guides and porters.
📅
Best season
The dry season between December and March provides the most reliable weather conditions for the demanding ascent to the peaks. During the rainy season, sudden flash floods can make the narrow mountain paths completely impassable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The peak regions are characterized by extremely steep rock faces, loose scree slopes, and sheer drop-offs that require absolute surefootedness. Navigating the alpine zone is technically demanding and the terrain can be highly disorienting.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality mountaineering boots, warm clothing for freezing nights at altitude, and a robust sleeping bag are completely indispensable. Essential climbing gear, a comprehensive first aid kit, and a satellite phone must be brought along.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles must be left far below the peak zones in inhabited settlements or thoroughly secured base camps. From the official starting point of the actual mountain ascent, all onward movement is conducted entirely on foot or with porters.
⚠️
Safety
The distinct risk of altitude sickness necessitates a very slow and carefully planned acclimatization process during the ascent. Unpredictable mountain weather and sudden rockfalls are constant threats demanding continuous vigilance.
⏱️
Time needed
Summiting these prominent peaks generally demands a multi-week expedition, depending largely on the chosen starting point. The daily stages must be planned flexibly to ensure adequate time for essential acclimatization to the altitude.
