Ontong Java Atoll (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Ontong Java Atoll, also known as Lord Howe Atoll, is one of the largest coral atolls on Earth, located in the far north of the Solomon Islands. It consists of approximately 120 small islets surrounding a massive central lagoon covering about 1,400 square kilometers. Geographically, it is classified as a Polynesian Outlier, as its inhabitants are culturally and linguistically more closely related to Polynesians than to the Melanesian majority of the country. The maximum elevation of the islands is only a few meters above sea level, making the atoll extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise and storm surges. Economically, the population depends almost entirely on marine resources and the production of copra and sea cucumbers (beche-de-mer). Its remote location has helped preserve traditional ways of life and social structures to this day.
