Krompachy is situated in the deeply carved valley of the Hornád River, surrounded by the dense forests of the Volovec Mountains and the Branisko mountain range. The history of this traditional Spiš town has been indelibly linked to mining and metallurgy since the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, Krompachy housed the largest and most modern ironworks in the entire Hungarian half of the empire, earning the town the nickname "the Hungarian Sheffield." This harsh industrial heritage is still palpable today, yet the town has also developed into one of Slovakia's leading winter sports centers. The nearby Plejsy ski resort attracts visitors with excellent slopes that regularly host international skiing competitions, while the surrounding nature invites extensive summer hiking.
