The Fort of Bakel is a historic military fortification situated on the banks of the Senegal River in eastern Senegal. Built by the French in the early 19th century, around 1818, it was designed to protect inland trading posts and secure control over river navigation. Its strategic location atop a hill provided an extensive view of the river and the surrounding territories, which was vital for colonial expansion. During the late 19th century, the fort was the site of intense conflict, particularly during the resistance led by Mamadou Lamine against French rule in 1886. The architecture of the fort is characteristic of French military design of that era, featuring thick walls and observation posts constructed from local stone. Today, parts of the facility are preserved as a historic monument, serving as a site of remembrance for the region's complex history and the anti-colonial struggle. Bakel remains a significant cultural crossroads due to its proximity to the borders of Mali and Mauritania.
