Fort of Podor (Senegal)

Weather…

The Fort of Podor is a significant landmark of colonial architecture in northern Senegal, located in the heart of the Fouta Tooro region. Originally built in 1744 by Pierre David for the French East India Company, it was intended to protect the lucrative gum arabic trade. After a period of neglect, the fortress was completely rebuilt and reinforced in 1854 by General Louis Faidherbe to solidify French presence against the forces of El Hadj Umar Tall. The structure is characterized by its ochre-colored walls and square layout, typical of French frontier forts of the time. The interior contains officers' quarters, storage rooms, and ammunition depots, some of which have been partially restored. The fort played a central role in monitoring maritime traffic on the Senegal River and served as an administrative center. Today, it houses exhibitions on local history and remains an important cultural reference point for the people of Podor.
