Argyle Petroglyphs
The Argyle Petroglyphs are located near Saint Vincent's international airport and represent a fascinating link to the ancient history of the Caribbean. These prehistoric rock drawings were incised into large volcanic rocks on the banks of the Argyle River. The motifs vary from simple circular patterns to complex faces, often interpreted as religious or shamanistic symbols. Archaeological investigations suggest that this site was used over centuries by various indigenous groups such as the Arawak and later the Kalinago. During the construction phase of the airport, special efforts were made to protect these valuable cultural assets and make them accessible to the public. The Argyle Petroglyphs are particularly significant as they show how deeply rooted the history of settlement is in the island's fertile coastal plains. Visitors can now explore the details of the carvings along a marked trail, where they are especially visible during damp weather or under low-angled light.
