💡 Tips

  • Check the status of the Transfăgărășan road before you go. It is typically open only from July to October and can close at any time due to bad weather.
  • In winter, the lake is accessible only by cable car from 'Bâlea Cascadă'. The road is closed due to the risk of avalanches.
  • The weather in the Făgăraș Mountains is extremely unpredictable. Pack warm clothes, a rain jacket, and sturdy shoes even in summer.
  • It gets extremely crowded on summer weekends. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and find a parking spot.
  • Do the short walk around the lake (about 45 minutes) to enjoy the views from different perspectives. Be careful on the uneven terrain.

🍽 Food

🍽
Grilled Trout

Fresh grilled trout, often served with polenta and garlic sauce ('mujdei'). Look for restaurants near Bâlea Cascadă or right at the lake.

🍽
Bean soup in bread

A thick bean soup served inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread. A warming and filling meal, good for the chilly mountain air.

🍽
Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács)

This 'chimney cake' is often sold by street vendors along the Transfăgărășan road. A sweet snack best eaten warm.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Artisanal cheese and sausages

Along the roadside and around the lake, vendors sell smoked cheese ('brânză afumată'), telemea cheese, and traditional sausages.

🛍
Fir syrup and honey

Look for 'sirop de brad' (fir tree syrup) and various types of mountain honey. These are popular local remedies and delicacies.

🧘
The trail towards Capra Saddle

Start the climb from the lake towards Șaua Caprei. Even a few hundred meters up, you will leave most of the crowds behind and get striking views.

🧘
The far side of the lake

Walk the path to the opposite side from the main buildings. It's much quieter and well-suited for taking photos without crowds.

🧘
Early morning by the shore

Be at the lake for sunrise. The still water reflecting the mountain peaks and the absolute silence is a magical experience before the day-trippers arrive.

Bâlea Lac is a striking glacial lake located at 2034 meters in the Făgăraș Mountains. Deep and crystal clear, it is framed by rugged peaks and represents a highlight of the Transfăgărășan alpine road. While the high-altitude highway is open in summer, the area remains reachable in winter only via a cable car from the Bâlea Waterfall below, making it a year-round destination for nature lovers. Every winter, a unique Hotel of Ice is carved directly from the lake's frozen blocks, attracting tourists with its ice bar, restaurant, and chapel. The lake serves as a vital base for high-altitude trekking, providing routes to Moldoveanu Peak (the highest in Romania) and Negoiu Peak. Several chalets nearby offer traditional Romanian cuisine, including warm soups and smoked meats, first-rate for cold mountain days. The surrounding national reserve is a sanctuary for chamois and marmots, often spotted by hikers.
