Bran Castle is Romania's most iconic landmark, perched on a dramatic rock at the historic border between Transylvania and Wallachia. Originally built in the 14th century as a defense fortress by the Saxons of Brașov, it gained global fame through its loose connection to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Despite the historical Vlad the Impaler having little to do with the structure, its Gothic towers and winding stairs perfectly fit the legend. In the 1920s, the castle became a beloved residence of Queen Marie of Romania, who transformed it into a royal summer home, leaving behind a legacy of refined interior design and beautiful gardens. At the foot of the castle, a small open-air village museum showcases traditional peasant houses from the region. The surrounding village is famous for its artisanal market where visitors can buy local handicrafts and 'brânză de burduf' (cheese aged in pine bark). Located just 30 km from Brașov, it is for anyone exploring the Carpathian Mountains.

Visiting
Bran Castle is open to the public. You can explore the interior rooms (including the famous torture chamber) and walk the exterior gardens and terraces. The castle is a major tourist attraction.
Typical hours
Typically open daily from 9:00 to 18:00 in summer (April-September) and from 10:00 to 16:00 in winter (October-March). Last entry one hour before closing. Check for holiday closures.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the castle, but flash is prohibited in some exhibition rooms to protect artifacts. Selfie sticks are not allowed. No commercial photography without permit.
Time needed
Plan 2-3 hours to explore the castle thoroughly, including the exhibition rooms, the open-air terrace, and the souvenir shops. Queues can be long in peak season.

Getting there
Bran is easily reachable by bus from Brașov (route 20, about 40 minutes). By car, follow DN73. There is a large paid parking lot near the castle. The area can be crowded on weekends.
Insider tip
Arrive early (before 10:00) or late afternoon to avoid the largest crowds. The castle is particularly atmospheric on a foggy day, reminiscent of the Dracula legend.
