Cetățuia Fortress Brașov (Romania)

Weather…

Cetățuia de pe Strajă, or the Citadel of the Guard, is a key historical fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city of Brașov. Its strategic location allowed for the monitoring of northern trade routes and provided an outer layer of defense for the medieval city. The fortress began as a wooden watchtower in 1524, but after being destroyed in 1529, it was rebuilt in stone and significantly expanded in the 17th century with massive bastions and curtain walls. Over the centuries, it functioned as a military garrison for Austrian imperial troops, a state prison, and an archive. Its distinctive horseshoe shape and rugged architecture make it a prominent feature of Brașov's skyline. Today, the citadel is a popular tourist destination, offering panoramic panoramic views of the Old Town, the Black Church, and the surrounding Carpathian peaks, serving as a reminder of the region's turbulent military history.
