Entroncamento is one of Portugal's youngest cities, located in the Santarém District. Its history and very existence are inextricably linked to the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century. The city's name literally translates to 'junction', marking the strategic point where the Northern Line (Linha do Norte) and the Eastern Line (Linha do Leste) converge. Originally a settlement for rail workers, it rapidly expanded into an important industrial and logistics hub. Today, Entroncamento is home to the National Railway Museum, which houses one of Europe's finest collections of historic locomotives and rolling stock, including the luxurious Portuguese Royal Train. The town became an independent municipality in 1945 and was granted city status as recently as 1991. Despite its short history, the city has a distinct character shaped by industrial heritage and modern urban planning. Its central location continues to make it a vital transit point for thousands of travelers crossing the country every day.
