Almada is situated on the southern bank of the Tagus River, directly across from Lisbon, and is best known for the monumental Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue. Inaugurated in 1959, this 110-meter-tall monument gives one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Portuguese capital and the 25th of April Bridge. Historically, Almada served as a crucial strategic defense point for the Tagus estuary, evidenced by the medieval Almada Castle. The city has a deep-rooted industrial heritage, particularly in shipbuilding, which still shapes the character of the Cacilhas district. Today, Almada is a bustling cultural hub, home to the Joaquim Benite Theater and expansive green areas like the Parque da Paz. Almada's coastline, Costa da Caparica, is famous for its over 20 kilometers of sandy beaches, making it a top destination for surfers and holidaymakers.
