Berlengas Archipelago (Portugal)

Weather…

The Berlengas Archipelago is located approximately 10 kilometers off the coast of Peniche in the Atlantic Ocean and has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011. The archipelago consists of the main island, Berlenga Grande, and smaller islet groups known as the Estelas and Farilhões. Its unique ecological status is derived from its role as a sanctuary for seabirds, including the common guillemot, which serves as the emblem of the reserve, and several endemic plant species adapted to the harsh maritime environment. Historically, the island is famed for the Fort of São João Baptista, a striking 17th-century fortification built to defend the coast and connected to the main island by a narrow stone bridge. The Duke of Bragança Lighthouse, built in 1841, stands at the island's highest point, providing vital navigation for vessels. The surrounding turquoise waters are exceptionally clear and rich in marine life, making it a premier destination for diving and snorkeling. Tourist access is strictly regulated to preserve the delicate balance of the natural environment and protect the nesting wildlife.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Berlengas Archipelago is best visited from May to September when the weather is stable and bird colonies are breeding. In spring and early summer, birds such as cormorants and gulls are especially active.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning the birds are most active and the islands are still quiet. Late afternoon the boats return, and the colonies are often best observed then.
📜
Etiquette
Access to the islands is only permitted on marked trails to protect fragile vegetation and breeding birds. It is strictly forbidden to disturb birds or approach nests.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are essential as the islands are rocky and windy. Binoculars are highly recommended for birdwatching from a distance.
🧭
Getting there
The Berlengas Archipelago is only accessible by boat from Peniche on the Portuguese mainland. Regular ferries and excursion boats operate in the summer months; the crossing takes about 30 minutes.
🦌
What to expect
Boat trips are weather-dependent - plan a buffer day in case of cancellations due to storms. The bird colonies are usually well visible, but shy species may require patience.
