National Forest of Mafra (Portugal)

Weather…

The Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a historic forest and former royal hunting ground established in 1747 by King John V of Portugal. Covering more than 800 hectares, the area was originally designed to provide resources for the Mafra National Palace and serve as a recreational estate for the Portuguese monarchy. Today, it stands as a significant nature reserve and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. The entire perimeter is enclosed by a 21-kilometer stone wall, sheltering a diverse ecosystem that includes red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, and several species of endangered birds of prey. The landscape is characterized by a dense cover of cork oaks, pines, and chestnut trees, supporting high levels of biodiversity. The Tapada serves as a center for environmental education and sustainable tourism, allowing visitors to explore the forest via hiking trails, mountain biking, or guided tours, highlighting the integration of cultural heritage and environmental conservation.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The park is open year-round, but the best time for wildlife watching is spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). Temperatures are mild and animals like deer and wild boar are more active.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk offer the best chances to see wildlife grazing or drinking. Animals leave the dense forests at these times to appear in open areas.
📜
Etiquette
Do not feed the animals or approach too closely, as they are wild. Stick to marked trails and leave no litter behind.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear (hiking boots) is recommended due to uneven forest floors and possible dampness. Binoculars help observe animals from a safe distance without disturbing them.
🧭
Getting there
Tapada Nacional de Mafra is about 40 km north of Lisbon and reachable by car via the A8 motorway. The main entrance is by the wall near Mafra; parking is available.
🦌
What to expect
The 21-km wall encloses a huge area - animals are widely scattered and take time to find. Walk slowly and take regular breaks at waterholes or clearings.
