Óbidos is an impressive medieval fortified town located in the Leiria District of Portugal, perched on a strategic hilltop. The town is completely enclosed by well-preserved 14th-century walls, which allow visitors to walk the entire perimeter of the historic center. Originally a Roman settlement known as Eburobrittium, it was later occupied by Moors before being recaptured by King Afonso Henriques in 1148. For centuries, Óbidos was known as the 'Town of the Queens' because it was traditionally given as a wedding gift by Portuguese kings to their consorts. The dominant Óbidos Castle features Manueline architectural elements and currently operates as a luxury Pousada hotel. Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with traditional whitewashed houses decorated with blue and yellow borders and blooming bougainvillea. Since 2015, Óbidos has been recognized as a UNESCO City of Literature, hosting numerous bookshops in unconventional locations like old churches. The town is also famous for Ginjinha, a traditional cherry liqueur often served in edible chocolate cups.
