Strzegom Basilica (Poland)

Weather…

The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Strzegom is a premier example of Gothic architecture in Lower Silesia, distinguished by its monumental scale and artistic detail. Construction began in the 14th century under the auspices of the Order of Saint John (Knights Hospitaller) and continued for several decades. Uniquely crafted from local granite and basalt, the basilica possesses a striking dark facade that reflects the region's geological heritage. The building is famous for its three richly decorated Gothic portals, featuring intricate tympanums that depict significant biblical events. Inside, the church is spanned by grand star vaults and houses a rare 15th-century stone sacrament house, which is considered a masterpiece of medieval stone masonry. In 2002, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of Minor Basilica, and in 2012, it was designated a Historic Monument of Poland. The basilica stands as a testament to the medieval prosperity of Strzegom and the enduring influence of the knightly orders in the region.
