Magura National Park (Poland)

Weather…

Magura National Park, hidden in the heart of the Lower Beskids (Beskid Niski) in southeastern Poland, is one of the country's most remote and least frequented protected areas. It preserves a gentle, densely forested mid-mountain landscape characterized by an almost uninterrupted, deep-green carpet of ancient mixed beech and fir forests. The park is defined by the deeply incised, untamed valleys of the Wisłoka River, which stand in stark contrast to the expansive, undisturbed mountain ridges. This profound isolation and sparse human settlement make the park a great sanctuary for rare predators and especially birds of prey; it features one of the highest population densities of the lesser spotted eagle in all of Europe, which is why this elegant hunter serves as the park's heraldic animal. Beyond the wilderness, the region also captivates culturally with the abandoned villages of the Lemko people, whose old wooden churches and cemeteries weather mystically among the trees.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (March-May) is excellent for the return of birds of prey and general bird migration. Autumn (September-October) has the deer rut and the colorful foliage of beech forests.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is well-suited for hearing songbirds and watching birds of prey circling. Late afternoon often sees deer emerging onto open clearings.
📜
Etiquette
Do not leave the trails to protect the beech and fir forests. Avoid making noise, as birds of prey and deer are sensitive to disturbance.
🎒
What to bring
A good binocular is crucial for spotting birds of prey in the tree canopy. Sturdy footwear and insect repellent are recommended for forest trails.
🧭
Getting there
The park is best reached by car; the nearest towns are Krosno and Jasło. A few bus lines connect surrounding villages to the park entrance.
🦌
What to expect
Birds of prey are shy and often only seen from a distance. A full day in the forest may, with luck, bring unforgettable encounters with deer and eagles.
